1. Housing was perfect. It was not far from the school, 15 minutes of walking. Beautiful flat where was everything i needed.
2. The school is well organized and everything was clear.
3. The teachers are very cooperative and explain you everything clearly.
4. Afternoon activities were well organized and I was given chance to see all the beautiful places in St. Petersburg.
5. There is nothing I didn't like.
The classes themselves were very well-tailored to taking in students with varying skill levels, owing to their origins and the language grading systems they use, and getting them all to a similar level - abetting faster progress over the duration of the course. This may also be attributed to the excellent teaching staff at the school, whose impeccable English was of immeasurable value. Further, the classes were very well suited to improving speaking. As this is something which is often overlooked when foreign languages are taught in universities, for instance, this was also valuable.
I would also say that there could have been a greater focus on writing and passive skills such as reading and listening, but since these are things which can be done outside Russia, changing the course structure to favour these skills would be nonsensical, and probably detrimental to speaking practice. As far as I can think, the course itself was as good as I could possibly have hoped for.
As to the location of the Institute, and of the Accommodation, both struck a good balance between being central and being far enough from the centre to allow for a deeper experience of the city, away from tourists. I value being able to walk places, and the institute and accommodation was near enough to the centre, and indeed to book shops, restaurants, and public houses, to allow this. The proximity of Technologicheskiy Metro Station was also very handy, as the opportunity to use public transport was also there. I very much enjoyed being in the area I was, and found those with whom I shared accommodation very pleasant company.
With regards the facilities in that accommodation, and in the vicinity more broadly, all was agreeable. The only thing which I considered a problem in any way was the lack of an oven - which limited slightly the variety of meals which I was able to prepare. I did more than manage, however, to cook using the stove. This did not prove to be too great of an issue. I would also take this opportunity to express that the cleaning was done very well and regularly.
The activities organised by the school were very interesting and the guides were very well-informed. I am very grateful for the efforts gone to in order to organised such trips - even those not strictly part of the timetabled plan (for example: a tour of an exhibition in Russia - My History with a historian, which I thoroughly enjoyed).
I would absolutely recommend this school to others and plan to return in future.
I had a great experience learning Russian at Derzhavin school overall.
I had a cozy and welcoming host family. The quality of the teaching was high and classes were organized and engaging. I felt supported by the school and it felt good to be able to have lots of fun people around to spend the time with. Activities were varied, and interesting. I progressed with Russian a lot during my 3 weeks in Saint Petersburg. The teachers were excellent, very patient and thorough. Its hard to find anything I didnt like about the experience.
I liked everything I wish I could have stayed there more to improve more my Russian. Classes were interesting I would have wanted to hear and speak more Russian even if I would not have understood everything even during the excursions but other things were good. Because I stayed there just one week I didn't get a book for my class and maybe this is one thing that I would change because I would have liked to have it for me at home.Näytä yksityiskohdat » Lue lisää...
It was a very good school. I could not speak Russian at all, but I became able to use greetings and introduce myself.
If there are things I do not understand after class, my teacher contacted me and helped me through e-mail. He was a very good teacher.
Because the school is also close to the center of the city, we had plenty of sightseeing. I think there is nothing to be troubled about.
We enjoyed activities after school and on Saturday.
My host family was a very kind family.
I was able to live a very good studying abroad. I also want to visit to study.
I think the school could rearrange the schedule a little better in order to facilitate the studies, since I had to repeat the first module (1.1) because according to the school administration I didn't achieve enough scores to be able to go to the next one. I believe the location of the school is great, really appreciated the school shared flat as well, they we're really close one another.Näytä yksityiskohdat » Lue lisää...
I've organised my host family on my own but that was no problem for the school. In winter, the classes are very small, so that one can learn a lot! The teachers are very well educated and have an answer to any of my questions. The school facilities are in a very safe part in the centre of St. Petersburg but one has to walk 10min from the metro station. The buildings are well equipped, the only "interesting" thing was that we weren't allowed to throw toilet paper into the toilet. But that's more or less normal in old buildings. I really enjoyed the activities - all of them are voluntary and some of them for free. Once it happened that our guide lost orientation and we had to ask Google for the place, where the museum was. All other excursions were held with a very experienced and knowledgeable guide.Näytä yksityiskohdat » Lue lisää...
It is difficult for me describes my experience, my English is not good enough for that. Classes are good, very good really. The enface is conversation. The students need to start to talk. It is for the elementary class. I don't know what is the enface in high levels.
The material is excellent, the books are very good and the additional exercises really makes you improve the grammar and vocabulary.
The location, facilities and housing are great. I went to school by foot every day and almost all my colleagues too. The metro is near and there are buses and trolleybuses in the street. The classrooms are new, very clean, the bathrooms are very, very clean. The hall with free coffee and free tea is a success.
There are social activities every day (less on Monday, the day of reception of new students) and excursions on Saturday, at the palaces and historical places near Petersburg. Some excursions by foot around the city are cancelled because of the rain. The weather is really disagreeable there. Cold and raining.
The only thing I would like to be different is the use of phonetic alphabet in class. But I suppose most of students don't know it. The accent of some classmates upset me. The teachers, in basic courses, don't correct accents. I suppose lots of correction can make us shy and stop to try talk.
Each class has at least 5 different activities. The classes are dynamic and never boring. And funny too. Lots of laughing.
Another think: there are problems in the local level tests. Mine it isn't good and the first week was a waste of time, I think.
Everything was perfect. I would like to return again and stay longer.Näytä yksityiskohdat » Lue lisää...
I've been studying Russian in the Derzhavin Institute for three months and I'm going back there for three months! It was really great!
The teachers were fantastic and the staff were always there to help you. I improved a lot during those three months!
My personal feeling: I appreciated the whole organisation of the school. All the teachers were very professional and well educated. The location of the school is okay. I was there for three weeks - the first two weeks I learned a lot and I'm grateful for it. The last week unfortunately I didn't progress at all because my classmates didn't advance that fast (which is understandable as it is completely different language for them) for me it was much easier as the Czech and Russian language are very similar. So in my opinion for the third week, my teacher could have moved me to a higher class so I could continue to learn a new things. But in general I am really happy with the course in your institute and I hope to return and improve on my Russian.Näytä yksityiskohdat » Lue lisää...
1) The school was well organized, very experienced, so many foreign students, and every week there is a different cultural program including Saturdays. I visited Tsarkisne Selo with a group of students, the guide, Valeria can also speak English, she was very professional. On my last Thursday I joined another program: Dostoyesvky and St Petersburg, a Two-hour walk around the city, with a knowledgeable guide.
2) Their teaching system was more traditional, easy for me to adapt. The language course was rapid-paced. You have to do your homework in order to follow the teacher the following day. The teacher, Marina was very dedicated, patient, knowledgeable. On my last day, I wrote one sentence in Russian (used google): "You are one of the best teachers I have ever met in my life" as my sincere gratitude to her.
My experience was very good indeed: I particularly liked the friendliness of the staff and the good organization of the school.
The location was excellent and the facilities were well maintained and user friendly.
The classes were well organized and the program was good. I, myself would have endured a bit more class time, meaning that I was expecting a course a bit more intensive in the morning - for instance, I think 2X90 minutes would be preferable to the actual setting of 2X75 minutes that we had.
Well, if the school was perfect, I would be writing this in Russian, but then that have been a miracle!
In total, I was very pleased and I will try to return next year for another week!
Russian language course was very good.
The only problem was I was assigned in a class which is not suitable to my level. Others were able to study than me. Well, that only took five days.
All's well that ends well.
The teachers were very friendly and competent. The school was good and I can recommend it to my friends.
- Teachers: Ms Elisabeta Kuskova, very professional and friendly
- Location: very suitable,
- Facilities: excellent, coffee and sushkies were available all the time,
- activities, and housing: I did not attend
Competent professors, nice, available and prepared. I had fond memories of the school and are also improved with regards of the Russian language both at the level of comprehension, reading and spoken.Näytä yksityiskohdat » Lue lisää...
I really liked Derzhavin Institute. What was really good was that we had small classes (4 pupils in a pro class) and this was really effective. We stayed with our friends, so we did not use the housing from the school. St. Petersburg is a really nice city and I really enjoyed my time there. We would like to come back in spring time and continue to learn Russian. :-)Näytä yksityiskohdat » Lue lisää...
I was impressed by the professionalism of everyone at the institute; the classes went at a pace that was very challenging but not impossible. My only complaints would be with the guesthouse. The Internet was terrible, and that was my only contact with home so it was frustrating. Also, the furniture was cheap and uncomfortable. Overall though, I wasn't too disappointed with the guesthouse. All the appliances worked and the bathroom was nice.Näytä yksityiskohdat » Lue lisää...
The classes were great. I learned to read, write and talk simple sentences in 3 weeks, so it was very nice.
The teachers we had were very good and they taught me a lot. The housing was also very good.
All in all it was a very pleasant experience.
We had a very good group. Although the age difference was large, I felt like an equal. The teachers were able to lead the discussion with simple and difficult questions.
The atmosphere was cheerful and supportive.
The location of the Institute is good, not too far of Metro, beautiful views. The facilities were suitable. Though is there a lift somewhere for persons who can't use stairs?
The housing was good. My landlady was talkative. When I came to her place, she said, “Badly you speak Russian but the teachers will make you speak.” That was true - she knew! After two days we were able to talk to each other.
I stayed only for one week – being a senior citizen I wasn't able to afford more. Do you have any discount prices?
All in all, the experience was very good.
My name is Mark Ainsworth, I am from England and have spent 5 weeks at Derzhavin Institute. During my stay in Russia, I can confidently say that my level of Russian has improved. I was very impressed by the standard of tuition at the institute and all of the staff were very friendly and helpful, always aiming to resolve any problems which may have occurred. Overall I am very pleased with my progress at the institute and I would definitely return to this institute and recommend it to anyone if they are looking for a language school which offers a high standard as well as an enjoyable and varied social program.Näytä yksityiskohdat » Lue lisää...
I am a language enthusiast and I really enjoy travelling abroad to study languages whenever I have the possibility to do it. I have been studying languages in Spain, England, Iceland and Germany, but this language course was the best one I ever had so far. Great atmosphere, lessons and activities are well organized and the Institute is located in a beautiful historical palace in the center of the city.Näytä yksityiskohdat » Lue lisää...
My name is Mary and I am from the United States. I have been studying at Derzhavin Institute for a month already and I am extremely impressed with everything so far. The staff here are highly professional, and at the same time they encourage a friendly and safe learning atmosphere. I am a certified TEFL teacher and I was pleased to see that the same teaching techniques which I use in my lessons are also used by the teachers here. They provide a wide spectrum of affordable after school activities as well as a wonderful insight about the best restaurants, parks and how to get around the city. The living arrangements are quite nice and if there is a problem with a light or the WiFi, they make sure that it’s quickly taken care of. I enjoy spending time with the other students and interacting with the staff and I highly recommend Derzhavin Institute to anyone who wants to study in Russia.Näytä yksityiskohdat » Lue lisää...
The Derzhavin Institute is absolutely the best Russian language school in St. Petersburg. The teachers are friendly, helpful and highly qualified. The friendly atmosphere helps you to get the maximum profit from the study.
For any questions, demands, or problems, you can contact the administrative staff and they are always ready to help.
I hope to return soon.
The location is perfect because it is near the flat. The school is big, and the common area is perfect for all students to know each other and practice the Russian language.
It is also perfect because the teachers are really nice, they give you advice about living in St. Petersburg.
Derzhavin is located near the Tekhnologichesky Institut metro station, roughly ten minutes from Nevsky Prospekt, the cultural center of the city. Nevsky Prospekt is breathtaking, offering a seemingly limitless amount of activities, whether it be strolling through the various shopping centers, eating in one of the many cafes or restaurants, or taking a cruise through the Neva river.
The school itself is absolutely beautiful, and the classrooms are neat and comfortable. Pictures don't describe how gorgeous the building really is, glowing a cheerfully vibrant yellow. There is a quaint park behind the institute that features a beautiful, little pond and an array of luminous flowers lining the pathway to the rear of the building.
The staff is wonderful, I never had an experience with any of them that wasn't entirely pleasant. In particular, my teacher Katya was always amicable, turning a class that very well could have seemed like a grueling grind into a lighthearted, delightful period that I looked forward to every morning. Students are put into classes depending on their skill level, and if you do not feel comfortable in the level you placed in, the staff will do their best to accommodate you. During my stay, the classes never exceeded five or six students, very often fewer, creating a very personal learning environment.
The school offers shared apartments and the opportunity to stay with a Russian family. I chose the shared apartment, and I could not have been happier. The apartment was spacious and clean, with an operational kitchen and bathroom. I had two apartments throughout my stay, the first was located less than a minute away from the institute, and the second around ten minutes away, offering a scenic walk through the charming side streets.
The school offers a wide array of excursions and social activities, proffered by a woman also named Katya who was always friendly and helpful, as well as incredibly well versed in the history of the places you will visit. Among the many destinations available are Petergof, Peter and Paul Fortress, and the the Hermitage museum. Not only does Katya make these places accessible, she also knows everything that could possibly be known about them. These excursions are very affordable and definitely worth exploring.
St. Petersburg as a whole is an incredible city, mixing a a somewhat antiquated exterior with a spry, youthful atmosphere. Petersburg is a city where there is always something going on, a place where you can always find something to do. As well as being an immensely active city, Petersburg also seemed incredibly safe. Neither I, nor anyone I knew, ever experienced any form of street crime, despite often walking home very late at night.
Overall, I could not recommend Derzhavin Institute more. It was a once in a lifetime experience, and it exceeded every expectation I had.
I enjoyed my time at school, my teachers were really good and it wasn't too difficult following the lessons and doing the homework. I did not take part in any activities because I did not stay in the city center and I did not want to be out on my own late at night. My landlady was great and I truly appreciated all her efforts though hygiene was not a priority and as already stated, she lived in a very nice area but a little outside the city center.Näytä yksityiskohdat » Lue lisää...
When you arrive at the airport you are taken care by somebody who puts down (deposits) you in your apartment (this year, I had a very beautiful apartment, clear, clean (appropriate) with bathroom, cooking (kitchen) and toilet very well conceived (designed).
My professor was very nice and explained me well the various grammatical rules which are not always obvious and which I have difficulty in applying.
What is very practical is that the apartment is situated next to the school.
For the activities, I preferred to discover by myself to plunge me into the Russian life with most meadows of the population.
The Derzhavin Institute is a well developed program, able to accommodate any skill level and staffed with a friendly, welcoming administrative staff and instructors that are passionately dedicated. The staff will give you a placement test on your first day and give you a tour orienting you to the city and nearby places of interest, i.e. food, banking, etc. The program offers standard classes which last until 1300 as well as a intensive course which lasts until 1500. The standard package is an excellent way to learn the language and tour the city, but the intensive program will also give you plenty of time for sightseeing. I spent three weeks in the intensive course and accrued a greater fluency in that shorter period of time than the three years I spent studying the language in college. The two instructors I had during this period were both extremely personable and passionate in their work, making a concerted effort to incorporate everyone into the discussion and exhibiting a much appreciated patience. The class size is a huge plus, with each class being only five to eight people, and being set in a small, intimate room where you are significantly more engaged and are much more inclined to participate in discussion. The program also offers tours of sights such as Peterhof, St. Isaac's Cathedral, and Peter and Paul Fortress, as well as the occasional boat party. Valeria, the tour guide, is experienced and will speak in both Russian and English. This program is an awesome way to either introduce yourself to Russian or continue your education in the language, and become acquainted with Saint Petersburg.Näytä yksityiskohdat » Lue lisää...

No but we can provide the classes in the school on the requested dates.
If the student needs an invitation letter from the school, then she can send at least 15 lessons per week. Most likely the classes are in the afternoon. As for the singing classes it might be possible to arrange the teacher, but these classes will be not commissioned and we could only start searching for the teacher after we get the application form for the programme.
In this link there is the info and prices on the Skype lessons http://www.derzhavin.com/en/pages/753/.
